We were able to locate detailed royalty sharing information for the University of Michigan dating as far back as 1991. An email from a representative of the University of X stated that the school has had three iterations of its policy on patent royalty distribution. The first applied to agreements effective before July 1, 1996; the second to agreements between July 1, 1996, and July 1, 2004; and the third to agreements entered into after July 1, 2004 (with respect to the inventor share).

University of Michigan Technology Transfer Policy

After recovery of University Expenses, aggregate revenues resulting from royalties and sale of equity interests shall be shared as follows.

  • Up to $200,000: 50% to the Inventor(s)
  • Over $200,000 (and up to $2,000,000): 30% to the inventor(s)
